Although Third Text Asia started its journey as an extension of Third Text published in London, its ultimate aim is to become an independent discourse representing the specific situation of contemporary cultures in Asia but also in a world-wide perspective. Focusing on the diversity of visual arts practices in Asia – painting, sculpture, photography, site specific installation and performance, video, film and architecture — TTA offers a critical space for the development of scholarship, art criticism and art history in relation to Asia’s own traditions and contemporary cultures but also challenging the West’s claim as ultimate arbiter of what is historically significant within modernism, and thus legitimating what is included or not in its universal history. The vastness of the Asian continent, its enormous populations and different cultures frequently in conflict are major obstacles to establishing communication. Third Text Asia provides a channel of cross-cultural dialogue that will encourage modern Asia’s own voice.
Third Text Asia recognises Asia’s unique identity but does exclusively limit itself to Asia. Third Text Asia seeks a dialogue of equality on which all of humanity can partake.
